Static screens for Canon and Nikon tubes are now available, they are circular filters ground to a 5 micron finish. The outer diameter of the Nikon screen is 54.42mm The outer diameter of the Canon screen is 57.29mm. I will try and get some footage up soon.

Check your canon tubes size!

Recently I have noticed that some of the canon EOS macro tube manufacturers have started to use a narrower inner diameter. This diameter is too narrow for the canon DCX condensers to fit and also the statics screens for canon tubes will not fit. I am trying to find a manufacturer that still makes the tubes to the original specifications, but if anyone knows where you can get them post a comment with the link.

The new tubes have an inner diameter of 56.71mm, this is not wide enough to fit condensers or GGs

The old tubes have an inner diameter of 57.35mm, this is the correct side for condensers and GGs.

Ask the seller which size they sell before you purchase them. Old tubes and new tubes are still compatible with each other as they both have a 60mm thread so you can mix and match old and new tubes.

I am getting some custom made tubes which will look better and allow condensers and static GGs to fit, they should be ready in a week or two.

Nikon tubes are fine and condensers and GGs fit well into all the types I have tried.

Click Read more to read my $55 DoF adapter tutorial

With the new static GGs you can make yourself a complete depth of field adapter for less than $50.

It should be noted that this is a basic static adapter, but even though it is basic it has the ability to create great images when used by a skilled film maker. Despite the low cost it has the facility to be upgraded easily and is a great introduction to the world of 35mm adapters.

Parts list (including postage):

Extension tubes x 2( $5 each) = $10

43-55mm step up =$4

55-60mm step up (for canon) or 55-57mm step up (for nikon)= $9

Condenser to fit canon EOS tubes= £8 (about $13) or Nikon fit for £11 (about $18)

Circular GG to fit canon EOS or nikon tubes = £12 (about $19)

(Underlined parts can be bought from WSP35.com)

Total (for canon) $55 or $60 (for nikon)

This is possibly the highest quality DoF adapter you could build this cheaply. Remember it is only $55 including all of the postage!

At the moment I have no canon DCXs in stock so if you want to make one I recomend you go with the nikon mount, this also gets rid of the problem of having to source the correct sized canon extension tubes.

Once you are comfortable with this adapter possible upgrades you may want to consider would be converting it to a vibrating adapter or adding an achromatic lens. The good thing about this design is that it is easy to upgrade it and add extra parts.

I and another HV20 member have gotten a quote for some custom made flip modules for DoF adapters; and at the moment they are quoting $70 each for an order of 15 pieces.

Click the link on the right to continue reading.

This is only for the glass prism assembly only, not the housing, you will have to figure that out; we have come up with some ideas maybe we can solve it in this thread! 3rd party systems cost around $600

Specs:

4 right angled prisms

Cemented

In and out prism are AR coated

Individual prism size is 45x45x45mm (should even be big enough for use with larger cameras.)

60-40 surface quality

BK-7 Optical glass

So is anyone interested?

$70 is the price per piece for me, with shipping both ways it will end up costing more like $80-90 I expect.

Things are sure to change so I will keep you updated,

Steve

I have just added an aluminium oxide pack to the products section.

Included:

10 grams of 5 micron white aluminium oxide

10 grams of 9 micron white aluminium oxide

10 grams of 15 micron white aluminium oxide

10 grams of 25 micron white aluminium oxide

£9 with free postage.

I use the powder to grind focusing screens for DoF adapters.

It creates a very fine grain structure perfect for focusing screen use.

There are many different grades of aluminium oxide available. Commonly used are 5, 9, 15 and 25 micron, meaning that the individual particles of aluminium oxide are X microns across. The higher the number the higher the difusion produced by the GG. A 5 micron screen will be the sharpest, but more prone to hotspotting. A 25 micron screen will appear slightly softer, and loose more light, but will be less likely to hotspot. Some people think that the screens with more diffusion have a more "filmic image".

Firstly I have just started a page of user videos which can be found here:

http://wsp35.com/wp/?page_id=201

Thanks for Jean-Christophe for getting the ball rolling with his low light test video.

If you have a video you want to add leave a comment or use the contact form, cheers.

Secondly, I should have a couple of new products soon. These will include:

Condensers for Nikon extension tubes

Small camera achromats, compatible with43mm and 37mm threaded camcorders.

Full adapters

Adapter body tubes (custom made!)

52 and 55mm Circular GGs for use in static adapters (should have a sample video to show them in use also)

Also, should hopefully have the vibrating holders for canon tubes back in stock this week, sorry for the wait guys.

Finally, I made a post a week or 2 ago about an ident I was making for a film festival. I have finished it now so check out the final version.

I was using a push bike as a dolly so unfortunately didn't have any spare hands to operate a 35mm adapter so this is all shot bare.

Two years ago I had one of my films shown at the final screening of this same festival, and a film group I am in also hosted a mini screening in an outdoor cinema, check out the flyer we made for it on the right.

The festival is all about young film-makers in rural areas; it's tagline is "You'd be surprised at what happens right under your nose". I was given a copy of the logo, and have been working for a couple of days. Here is a draft of what I have gotten so far.

I decided to film some of the locations where the screenings are taking place, and to position the logo in the location in post. I did this using a mixture of match moving and compositing in after effects. I did the final edit in Premier Pro. This was all shot using a Canon HV20 while riding my bicycle!

This is the first draft, to test the principle. I hope to record some more tracking shots to vary the locations a bit. I am also playing with animating the elements of the logo.

Luckily when I composited it in after effects I pre-composed the text layer so that I could animate the different words without affecting the main composition. Here is a version with the text animated. I am not sure which one I prefer.
